Each person riding a bicycle is potentially one less car

Reduce local traffic congestion. Each person riding a bicycle is potentially one less car. Bicycle valets reduce traffic by reducing the number of people who arrive by car.

Encourage attendance. Many people avoid events due to parking hassles. Bicycles are fast and easy to check-in and with less cars parking is sure to be a breeze.

The device that later emerged as the bicycle appeared in 1817. It was essentially a sort of walking device invented by Baron von Drais to assist him to travel around his extensive grounds.

It consisted of 2 wheels in line and was propelled by the driver sitting astride it and moving his boots against the footpath.

As opposed to a previous version it could be steered.

The machine was constructed of wood and, aside from the drivers feet, had no braking system.

Eventually, in 1861, the brothers Michaux included pedals in the original machine. They attached to the front wheel and simply an extension of the axle. The rider was able to pedal as opposed to scooting. The machine was universally referred to as a 'boneshaker' since being constructed of wood with no shock absorbers, travel over cobblestones and dirt roads was certainly a bone-shaking event! Because the pedals applied power directly to the wheel with no gearing, the speed of the machine was dependent on the size of the wheel, ( and how fast you could pedal!).
